Early childhood education-Children are enrolled in partnering EOF Head Start or
faith based preschool programs. These programs are inclusive, full day early
care and education programs. Each participating classroom is staffed with BA,
AA, and CDA credentialed personnel.
Professional Development-Classroom teachers participate in monthly professional
development activities focused on implementing strategies for enhancing
children's language, literacy, and pre reading development as well as improving
the quality of the literacy environment. Teachers also receive ongoing
training and technical assistance from their mentor coach.
Parenting Education-Parents have the opportunity to participate in monthly
parent education activities, including monthly breakfasts and dinners at each of
the partnering sites. Parents receive information on their child's progress and
ways to create language and literacy activities in the home. Each child takes
home two books monthly so parents and children can participate in shared book reading.
Mentor Coaching-Each mentor coach is assigned to 3 classrooms and works
intensively with the classroom teachers to support the implementation of
curriculum, to demonstrate techniques that support scientific based reading
research, to provide feedback to teachers, and to assist teachers as they
monitor children for progress. Mentor coaches have a minimum of a Bachelor's
degree in Early Childhood Education, or more than 2 years of experience, and
additional training in language and literacy.
Assessment and Evaluation-Classrooms are measured for progress with the Early
Childhood Environmental Rating Scale, the Early Language and Literacy Classroom
Observation, and the Early Language Behavior Observation. Children are assessed
with the following measures: Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test, G3, Expressive One
Word Vocabulary, DIBELS Letter Naming, and Concepts of Print.
